Ultimate One-Truck Build: Bruce's Sleeper Duty

🎙️ Guests: Bruce Baldwin, Michael Likos
🛠️ Topic: Building the ultimate "do-it-all" truck
📍 Episode Theme: Dream builds, truck evolution, and finding balance
The Dream Build Question
This episode kicked off with a question many off-road enthusiasts have asked themselves: If money wasn’t an object, what would your ultimate vehicle build be? Not just the flashiest or fastest, but something that checks all the boxes—desert capable, trail proven, comfortable on the road, and still able to tow, explore, and camp.
Bruce Baldwin joins the pod to talk about how that question shaped his own build journey—from clapped-out K5s and street-racing Camaros to his current one-truck solution: a shortened 2011 F-250 6.7L Powerstroke diesel, fully linked, capable of point-to-point runs, and a surprisingly competent trail vehicle.
The Street Racing Years
Before getting dirty in the desert, Bruce spent years street racing everything from Fox Body Mustangs to LS-swapped Silverados. Growing up with a love for horsepower and DIY wrenching, he built stroker motors, swapped transmissions, and even raced at sketchy industrial drag strips in the middle of the night. But as life changed, so did priorities—and daily drivers started replacing 600-hp Camaros.
Enter the Bronco Era
Bruce’s return to off-road began with a bone-stock mid-90s Bronco—a simple TTB rig that quickly became a sleeper-style prelander. With the help of Mikey, the truck got a full front-end overhaul, custom fabricated cage, tasteful suspension upgrades, and 35s on stock wheels. It was clean, fast enough, and capable in the desert.
But something still didn’t click.
Despite the build being nearly dialed, Bruce found himself leaving it parked. The high bucket seats, caged interior, and lack of creature comforts made it impractical for daily use. The Bronco was desert-ready—but it wasn’t versatile.
Back to Diesel Roots: The Birth of the Sleeper Duty
Bruce had always been a fan of the 2011+ 6.7L Powerstroke platform. After 150k miles of trouble-free driving in his work truck, he started thinking: What if I could build something that was fast, could tow, go off-road, and still cruise to Idaho in comfort?
He picked up a farm-worn regular cab long-bed F-250 for $12k. Then he and Mikey did what no sane person would do—they shortened the frame, sourced a short-bed from San Diego, and turned it into a factory-looking short-wheelbase diesel rocket.
🔧 Mod List Highlights:
  • 600+ hp via 70mm turbo, upgraded fuel system, intercooler
  • Coilover front end using custom-mounted 3.0 ADS shocks (14” travel)
  • Fully linked rear suspension with 22”+ travel and 40-gallon S&B fuel tank
  • 40” BFGs, ADS rear shocks, and Mercenary Offroad bumpers
  • Factory interior, AC, cruise, and quiet road manners
Desert-Ready Without Compromise
What makes Bruce’s truck different is its balance. It’s not the fastest, but it’s fast. It’s not the most extreme crawler, but it’ll do the Rubicon. It’s not a trophy truck—but it has 600 lb-ft of torque and pulls hard in 4th gear.
At King of the Hammers 2024, it surprised everyone. The fully linked rear end paired with a solid-axle front and 14" of travel gave it stability and speed that outperformed expectations—without a cage, no less.
One Truck to Do It All?
Bruce’s story is one a lot of people in the off-road world can relate to: chasing a dream build, going too far in one direction, and then realizing that versatility matters more. His new rig checks the boxes:
  • ✅ Point-to-point desert runs
  • ✅ Highway comfort & reliability
  • ✅ Room for gear, dogs, and weekends away
  • ✅ Trail-ready (but not trailer-only)
And most importantly, it still leaves room to grow.
Future Plans
  • Add a winch and armor for trail recovery
  • Build a low-profile camper setup integrated into a roll cage
  • Rework the transfer case mounting for added strength
  • Explore sway bar or cage options to balance safety and comfort
  • Eventually... maybe... chase 1,000 horsepower? 😉
Final Thought: Bruce reminds us that builds evolve just like we do. What worked when you were 22 might not make sense now. Whether you’re hunting horsepower or hunting trout in the Sierras, build something that matches your lifestyle—and don’t be afraid to pivot when the dream changes.
