We’re still figuring things out, but we’re rolling with it. Welcome to Episode 2 of the podcast, where we dive into one of the most asked questions on the forum: What do you pack for a trail trip?

The Charm of the Beater
We kicked things off reflecting on our “daily” drivers and why the beat-up rigs—the ones with character—just feel better. Sure, a new Tacoma runs great and has all the gear, but hopping into a sketchy 4Runner or the Mouse (Elliot’s single-cab Toyota) gives you that “choose your own adventure” vibe. Will it start? Probably. Will it make it home? Let’s find out.
There’s something soulful about old trucks. Every start is a gamble. Every trip feels like a story in the making.
Trip Planning: Cleanup, Thanksgiving, and Beyond
Our next couple events are locked in—the desert cleanup, then the big Thanksgiving trip. The great thing about Thanksgiving is there’s no rigid plan. Just show up, camp, hang, and get a few trail rides in if your truck decides to behave.
And that got us thinking…
Packing Philosophy: Basecamp vs. Point-to-Point
A forum question sparked a longer convo: How do you pack for a day trip vs. a multi-day point-to-point mission?
-
Basecamp Trips (like Thanksgiving): Chill vibes. Minimal stress. You’re not far from support. Bring the basics, a cooler full of beers, and you’re golden.
-
Point-to-Point Trips (like Mojave Road): It’s different. You need to prep like you're not coming back for a few days. More tools. More parts. More water. Everything counts.
Some of us (okay, most of us) overpack. Others rely on what’s already stashed in the rig. And then there’s that magical third option: buying a camper from a grandpa who already stocked it with sippy cups and tin foil. True story.
Tools: What Lives in the Truck Stays in the Truck

We got deep into trail tool philosophy. Highlights:
-
Some rigs have a full-time tool kit onboard—hammer, socket set, line wrenches, brake line flares, you name it.
-
Others rotate one master tool bag in and out depending on the trip.
-
Quick-access tools (channel locks, screwdrivers, crescent wrench) in a zip-up dirtbag pouch are clutch for on-the-fly fixes.
There was also a love letter to the Boxo tool roll ($700 but worth it), and a reminder that every broken part you’ve ever replaced has taught you what you actually need to carry.
“Every tool I use to prep the truck gets thrown in the tool bag. If I needed it once, I’ll need it again.”
Cooler Strategy (Yes, That’s a Thing)
-
Dedicated coolers per truck = smart.
-
A cooler in the bed = essential for family camping. Nobody wants to wake up the whole crew reaching for a road soda.
-
Fridges are next-level but require more planning—power, placement, and weight.
Pro tip: if you’re cooking full meals at camp (looking at you, chili cook-off) you’re going to need more than one fridge or cooler anyway. Might as well spread the love.
Welding on the Trail (Yes, That’s Also a Thing)
From field repairs in Johnson Valley to roadside weld jobs in Laughlin, we covered the DIY battery welding trick:
-
You need 3 batteries in series.
-
Welding rods.
-
Jumper cables.
-
Some kind of eye protection—even just the lens taped to your face.
We’re thinking about running a little How to Battery Weld clinic. Forum post incoming.
Why We Pack What We Pack
It all boils down to experience. Stuff breaks, you fix it, you pack that part next time. Some favorites:
-
Extra studs and lug nuts (because you can’t just find 5/8" race studs at AutoZone)
-
JB Weld
-
Zip ties and duct tape
-
Leatherman or multi-tool
-
Water (more than you think)
-
Brake line kits (you’ll use them… ask us how we know)
And always have some way to help others. That time you gave your limit strap to a stuck buddy? That’s what the off-road community is all about.
Looking Ahead: Guests, Builds & Deep Dives
This podcast is just getting started. The tech is clunky, the mics are hot, and we’ve had our share of camera shutoffs. But we’re here, we’re figuring it out, and we’re excited for what’s next:
-
Deep dives on iconic builds from the forum
-
Conversations with industry pros and passionate weekend warriors
-
Trip recaps with photo walk-throughs
-
Seminars (or at least long-winded breakdowns) on tech topics like field welding, suspension setup, and recovery tools
